Vertebrae Fractures
Spinal fractures may occur even after minor traumas. Most of these fractures do not require surgical treatment. However, spinal fractures due to high energy trauma may require surgical treatment. High energy fractures cause instability and spinal cord injury
Due to weakeness of an osteoporotic patient fractures may occur in the vertebral body. With the new techniques called kyphoplasty/ vertebroplasty cement may be injected into the bone. The patient’s pain may be decreased by minimally invasive method.
What are the causes of vertebrae fractures ?
For any reason, fractures may occur due to overloads on the spine. A fracture may occur in the anterior part of the spine (Compresion fracture) or may cause a fracture at the three parts of the vertebrae. Osteoporosis is one of the main causes of fracture.
What are the treatment options ?
Medical Treatment
Treatment of most fractures are resting and using pain killers. Using a corset is an effective treatment to reduce the pain.
Surgical Treatment
- Vertebroplasty
Cement is injected into the vertebral body with the helping of a cannula. The bone will be strenghthen and pain will be reduced.
- Kyphoplasty
Balloon is inflated into the spinal vertebral body and cement is injected to the space with the helping of a cannula.
